On January 18th, 2025, an officer with the Corning Police Department was conducting a traffic stop on W. Main Street. As the officer was out of his vehicle a Blue GMC pickup truck was traveling east on W. Main Street approaching the stop. The vehicle then failed to move over to the other lane as he passed the officer almost striking him. The officer then left the stop he was on and was able to catch up to the Blue GME pickup. The office then conducted a traffic stop on that vehicle. During the stop the officer learned at the driver was on active parole. The officer then conducted a parole search of the vehicle and located a pill bottle in the middle console of the vehicle that had the drivers name on it. Some of the pills in the bottle where not the ones that belonged in that bottle. The officer was then able to identify the pills as oxycodone a Schedule II controlled substance. The driver did not have a prescription for the oxycodone. The officer then arrested 59 year-old Darrin Thompson of Corning. Mr. Thompson was then taken to the Clay County Detention Center and charged with § 5-64-419 – Possession of a controlled substance a Schedule II controlled substance that is not methamphetamine, fentanyl, heroin, or cocaine with an aggregate weight, including an adulterant or diluent, of: Less than two grams (2g) a class D Felony, § 27-51-310 – Passing authorized vehicle stopped on highway “MOVE OVER LAW”, § 27-22-104 – No Proof of Insurance, and § 27-37-702 – No Seatbelt. On January 19th, 2025, Clay County District Judge Dan Stidham found probable cause to charge Mr. Thompson with the above listed charges.
