Organizers with the “Lost Melon “ contest that is a part of the Cave City Watermelon Festival have cancelled the contest after organizers claim participants repeatedly trespassed on numerous private properties searching for the “lost melons” throughout the city.
Two days ago organizers put out a post on social media asking participants to stay clear of private property.
Apparently the warnings did not help and last night the organizers ended the contest and stated they would likely not put this contest on again.
1st warning from event organizers 2 days ago:
“If you are hunting for the Lost Melon, do not search on private property!!!!! The Cave and the grounds around it are PRIVATE property! The big White House beside the cave (the Pinkston/Mize house) is PRIVATE property. We are getting reports that there are people searching in these yards in the middle of the night. This has to stop. Trespassing and destruction of property will not be tolerated. Come on y’all, we can do better than this! It’s all in fun.”
Yesterday’s post from organizers:
“😡The hunt for the Lost Melon is OVER! We asked people to stay OFF private property and it continued. Private property has been destroyed and stolen. We will absolutely not tolerate this. The remaining melons have been collected. This was supposed to be a fun, family activity. Why is this so hard for some to understand? It’s highly unlikely we will have this event again.”
The 44th Annual Cave City Watermelon Festival will be held July 25th-27th.
