Capital murder charges were filed on Friday morning against the Mountain View man accused in the murder of a Stone County deputy on January 2nd.

According to the arrest affidavit for Clinton Craig Hefton, age 52, Stone County Deputy Justin Smith went to Hefton’s address on Sawmill Road with a misdemeanor terroristic threatening warrant from the Stone County Sheriff’s Department.

As Deputy Smith approached the residence on foot, Hefton opened the door and began firing multiple rounds at the deputy, according to court documents.

Deputy Smith returned fire while retreating towards his vehicle for cover, but was struck several times.

Hefton continued to fire on the deputy after he made it back to the driver’s seat of his patrol vehicle, according to the affidavit.

A second responding officer arrived on the scene fired at Hefton, who then retreated inside and barricaded himself for a short time before surrendering to officers.

Clinton C. Hefton was arrested and is now charged with Capital Murder and is being held without bond.
