The Sharp County Sheriff, Shane Russell is warning of a new scam in Sharp county.
The Sheriff says a woman in a neighboring county was scammed out of $5,000 due to a similar scam. The scam involves a person receiving a call and informed of a warrant being issued for their arrest.
The scam is you can pay for the warrant “go away” by going to a local store and purchasing gift cards. The scammer will ask for the codes on the back of the gift cards.
Authorities say it does sound pretty convincing, but say you will not likely receive a phone call concerning a warrant. Authorities say you will never be asked to purchase gift cards.
The investigation into the scammers continues, if caught the person or persons will face multiple felony charges.
If you receive one of these calls, you’re asked to hang up and report it to your local police department or sheriff’s office.
