Around 12:30 on Sunday afternoon the Lawrence County Dispatch received several calls reporting a multi-vehicle accident on Hwy 63 just south of the Portia city limits. Initial reports stated as many as 12 vehicles could be involved including an ambulance.
Portia Fire Department, Walnut Ridge Fire Department, Hoxie Fire Department, Imboden Fire Department, Black Rock Fire Department, Ravenden Fire Department, Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office, Walnut Ridge Police Department, Hoxie Police Department, Lawrence County Office of Emergency Services and Arkansas State Police were all dispatched to the scene. Medical units from Lawrence County, Randolph County and Craighead County all responded to the area.
Visibility was described as zero as firefighters attended to the injured, Hwy 63 was closed and still remains closed. 11 individuals were transported to area hospitals with various injuries. Firefighters and responders assisted with loading the injured during hazardous traffic conditions.
Others involved in the accident were transported to the Lawrence County Courthouse to finish up the accident reports, conditions on scene made it dangerous for individuals to be in the area.
Fire Fighters assisted deputies with rerouting traffic around the area, keeping the scene closed off as Arkansas State Police continued their investigation.
