The third grade students at Sloan-Hendrix Elementary finished the ending of a book in style! The classes read the story of Sarah, Plain and Tall by Patricia Maclachlan. The story is set on the plains of Kansas during the early 1900s. A father and his two children had lost their wife and mother, and Sarah Wheaten from Maine answered the advertisement to try to replace her. She decided to try it, but wasn’t sure if she was going to be happy away from the sea. To our delight, she loved the family and decided that she would stay. The last lines from the book state, “Soon, there will be a wedding.”
After completing this story the third grade classes, with the help of Mrs. Duncan, decided to finish the story with a play called The Wedding Of Sarah, Plain and Tall! All third grade students had a role in the making of this play. Each student was responsible for creating what their character said and did. They had to really understand the story character by analyzing their character traits. The students then created the script for the play. And, what a marvelous job they did!!! The students drew in a crowd of over 65 audience members! For many of the audience members, it was standing room only.
The third grade teachers and students would like to thank everyone who was able to come and watch us perform this play that we worked so hard on. It helped to reinforce to each student that hard work pays off!
We would also like to thank Mrs. Duncan for the support and encouragement of this play. Without her, this would have never became a reality!
