… Heat advisory remains in effect until 8 PM CDT this evening…
* heat index readings… afternoon temperatures in the upper 90s
combined with a very moist air mass will produce heat index
readings between 105 to 108 degrees along and west of the
Mississippi River.
* Timing… 11 am CDT today to 8 PM CDT this evening.
* Impacts… prolonged exposure or strenuous outdoor physical
activity could lead to heat exhaustion and possibly heat
stroke. Cars can reach lethal temperatures in a matter of
minutes… always check the backseat and never leave children
or pets unattended in a vehicle.
Precautionary/preparedness actions…
A heat advisory means that a period of hot temperatures is
expected. Take extra precautions if you work or spend time
outside. When possible… reschedule strenuous activities to early
morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat
exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear light weight and loose fitting
clothing when possible and drink plenty of water. Check up on
relatives and neighbors.
To reduce risk during outdoor work… the occupational safety and
health administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks
in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by
heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke
is an emergency… call 9 1 1.
