Lake Charles State Park is Celebrating Spring Break with a Variety of Programs for All Ages!
It’s starting to feel like spring! As winter comes to end, people are getting excited to get outside and enjoy the beautiful weather. Arkansas State Parks offers affordable and family-friendly programs for all ages. Lake Charles State Park near Powhatan has a variety of programs during the week of March 16-23, 2013 to provide a fun way for your family to spend Spring Break. In addition, Lake Charles offers hiking trails, fishing opportunities, wildlife viewing, and self-guided kayak and canoe tours. If your family is looking to spend a few days, we offer camp sites, a Rental RV, and a Rental Yurt which can all be reserved in advance by calling the park office at (870) 878-6595.
Lake Charles State Park Spring Break Program Schedule – March 16-23, 2013
Saturday, March 16th ​
11a.m. Guided Kayak Tour – Get a chance to see Lake Charles from a new perspective by joining a park interpreter for an exciting kayak tour of the lake. No experience required. We will teach you the basics. Spaces are limited, so please pre-register at the visitor center or by calling the park at (870) 878-6595. The cost is $10 per adult, $5 per child ages 6-12, and children under 6 are free. Children ages 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult. The tour will last approximately 1.5 hours.
3:30p.m. Mockernut Trail Hike – Join a park interpreter for a hike on the newly renovated Mockernut trail. We will take a stroll along the lake shore and through our woodland to see the animals that call Lake Charles home. Meet at the Mockernut trail head, near the swim beach.
Sunday, March 17th
10a.m. Rattlesnake! – Join an interpreter in our Nature Center to learn how Rattlesnakes have evolved to be such amazing hunters. Meet in the Nature Center.
Wednesday, March 20th
10a.m. The Turtles of Lake Charles – How does something so slow survive so well? Meet a perk interpreter in the Nature Center to learn about some of the turtles that call Lake Charles home.
Thursday, March 21st
3p.m. White Oak Trail Hike – Take a hike with a park interpreter along the White Oak Trail to look for the variety of wildlife4 that live in our park. Meet at White Oak Trail Head.
Friday, March 22nd
11a.m. Bird Watching Starter Kit – Have you ever wanted to learn more about the birds that visit your yard or the ones you see on our nature trails? Join a park interpreter at the Nature Center to learn the basics of bird watching and how easy and fun it can be!
Saturday, March 23rd
10a.m. Dutch Oven Demonstration – If you’ve ever wondered how a Dutch Oven works or been intimidated to try one, this is a program for you! Gain hands-on experience making a meal from start to finish and enjoy a taste of your creation. We will supply the food, fire, and fun. This program is free to all participants.
1p.m. Bird Watching trail hike- If you are a beginning bird watcher who is just getting your “Starter Kit†or an advanced birder looking to get to know other “birdersâ€, this hike is for you! It will cover the Cedar Trail and the Butterflies and Blooms Trail. Meet at Visitor Center.
Lake Charles State Park is one of the 52 state parks administered by the State Parks Division of the Arkansas Department of Parks and Tourism. The park offers camping, boat launch ramp, a standard pavilion, picnic sites, swim beach, nature center, playground, restrooms and 3 bathhouses on 645-acre Lake Charles. Along with the visitor center and gift shop, the park offers three nature trails and year-round interpretive programs.
