Ravenden Police Chief Tim McComas reports that on Saturday he conducted a routine traffic stop on Hwy 63. Chief McComas stopped a 2000 Olds Bravada traveling south for a seat belt violation. While conducting his stop the Chief noticed the occupants acting nervous, McComas then asked the driver to exit the vehicle. After speaking with the driver, McComas called Cpl. Bobby Woods and the Ravenden K-9 unit for support. The driver of the vehicle, 53 year old Edwin Washam of Mammoth Springs gave officers consent to search the vehicle. After receiving consent, officers spoke with the two passengers, Kevin Barnes age 21 of Koshkonong Missouri and Michael Smithson age 31 of Williford. Both Smithson and Barnes were in possession of Marijuana and Drug Paraphernalia. A further search of the vehicle revealed a large amount of Marijuana and $2425.00 in cash. The Drugs and Cash were seized.
The driver, Edwin Washam of Mammoth Springs, Arkansas was charged with No Seat Belt and No Proof Of Insurance. Passenger Kevin Barnes of Koshkonong Missouri was charged with Possession of Marijuana and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Misdemeanor. Passenger Michael Smithson of Williford Arkansas was charged with Possession of Marijuana With Intent To Deliver and Possession Of Drug Paraphernalia, Felony. Smithson is being held in the Lawrence County Jail awaiting a Bond Hearing.
Chief McComas also stated the Ravenden Police Department was assisted by the Third Judicial Drug Task Force and the Arkansas State Police.
