Children’s Shelter of Walnut Ridge announces Summer Gala

Local volunteers join together to create a Gala to raise money for the Children’s Shelter.

Walnut Ridge, AR, 7/4/11 – The Children’s Shelter of Walnut Ridge announces the
upcoming Summer Gala on July 14th on Main Street in Walnut Ridge. The purpose of
the gala is to raise money for the Children’s Shelter and to gain attention to its ongoing
monetary needs. The Shelter’s Board joined with local volunteers to organize and
promote the event. The Gala will have a live auction and food will be served. After a
recent announcement that the shelter might have to close it’s doors due to lack of funding,
the Children’s Shelter the effort to raise more monetary donations.

The Shelter celebrated its second year of service to the children of Arkansas on June 1st
and has been the home to over 340 children from 24 counties in Arkansas. “We are in
need of monetary donations to keep the shelter open” says Lisa Hufstedler, Administrator
of the Children’s Shelter. “We rely on donations to pay staff and provide for the day-to-
day needs of all of our kids. Most people do not realize that we house children from all
over AR, especially several NEA counties including: Craighead, Greene, Independence,
Izard, Randolph, and Poinsett counties.”

The Children’s Shelter is a private, nonprofit organization that provides 24-hour
emergency temporary residential care to children who are victims of family violence,
neglect, and physical or sexual abuse. The facility, located in Walnut Ridge employs 14
staff members and currently houses up to 12 children at any given time.
